Robotic System for Sustainable Mobility Assurance and Interactive Provision for Handicapped
Identification of the problem: Generally in all societies, there is a special category requires particular care and attention as a result of their health status. According to the World Health Organization, there are 8.5 million of people with special needs in Egypt. The Egyptian Prime Minister stated that the true figure could be up to 15 million. Despite the rapid and enormous development in various branches of engineering, especially telecommunications and information technology along with nanotechnology, people with special needs have not seen the positive impact of this development in their daily lives and their movements. Wheelchairs for elderly and/or handicapped people are already available. Such wheelchairs or walking frames usually require ideal and plain environments. These devices are not autonomous enough and have many constraints, especially in cluttered and rough terrains. In such scenarios, it must be human intervention to work efficiently. On the other side, the integration of multimedia and communication features into a mobile assistance system that provides mechanical support is technically feasible, but has not been applied in the healthcare sector until now. Establishing an autonomous robotic system for providing high autonomy and mobility assistance for elderly and/or handicapped people is our own objective. The objective of this project is to realize a long-term and thereby sustainable mobility/autonomy assurance for elderly and/or handicapped people in their mobility and to preserve their independence in their usual environment.
